Union Catholic Edged in Championship

A week after reaching the semifinals of the Scarlet Shootout at Rutgers, Union Catholic was hoping to get a team showcase event championship. They finished one point short however, falling to upstart Sankofa Academy from Philadelphia 68-67 in the championship game of the Hoop Group Summer Showcase at Hoop Group Headquarters in Neptune.
Half of the 16 team field was made up of NJ schools.
Sankofa, a Philadelphia public league team that will have its first graduating class next spring surprised four opponents over the course of the day. The scrapped and showed a well balanced attack.
The final was a game of wild swings as Union Catholic went up 20 early in the first half but fell behind by 9 with 3 minutes to play. They responded with another run and had a chance to win at the buzzer however but a tough well defended shot was off the mark.
5-foot-8 rising Sr. Dache Talbert led the winners with 22 points and 3 treys. 5-foot-11 rising Sr. Damon Lynn tallied 20 points with 4 treys for Union Catholic.
