There are many good matchups around the state this weekend that people will talk about. They're big games with league and playoff implications.
Here are games that deserve mention:
Sparta (4-0) at Pope John (4-0), Saturday, 1PM. This is the battle of Sparta and both teams are unbeaten, which will bring a good atmosphere. Sparta has scored 177 points, while Pope John has 183, with neither team being tested yet. Pope John has three top skill players in wide receiver Noah Brown, tight end and Florida State commit Ryan Izzo, and sophomore quarterback Sonny Abramson. Sparta features the passing of Matt Seville and the running of Lucas Faria.
Eastern (4-0) at Williamstown (3-1), Friday night, 7PM. This features two of the top teams in South Jersey Group 5, where it could be the first of two games between them this year. Eastern has scored 182 points, while Williamstown is in the last of a tough four game stretch. Eastern has quarterback Tom Flacco leading their high octane offense, while Williamstown has a deep backfield, including John Chamberlin.
Penns Grove (3-0) at Woodstown (3-0), Saturday afternoon. Penns Grove hasn't been winning by the big scores of last year, but both teams have beaten a tough Glassboro team. Penns Grove's offense is led by the running and passing of Dahkim Seals and RaeQuan Norman has been a terror at inside linebacker. Woodstown features the running of Semaj Thomas, while Nathan Prus is the leading tackler on defense.
Jackson (3-0) at Manalapan (3-0), Friday, 7PM. This is the replacement date of a game that was postponed on opening weekend and now has two undefeated teams. Manalapan come off a good win over Middletown South and have wide receiver Saeed Blacknall hurting opponents through the air. Jackson has outscored opponents, 116-14, and the defense has featured linebackers Ken Bradley and Vinny Celidonio.
Edison (2-1) at Monroe (3-0), Friday, 7PM. Two surprising teams meet, with Monroe outscoring opponents, 174-24, while Edison has beaten league powers Piscataway and Sayreville. Edison's defense has defensive back Joe Kim and sophomore linebacker Khaliyl Everett leading in tackles. Stephen Karoly has thrown eight touchdowns without an interception and Akeer Franklin has rushed for 600 yards.
