October 3, 2013There are several games around the state this weekend that people will talk about. They’re big games with league and playoff implications; all games feature New Jersey teams playing one another.
Here are games that deserve mention:
Timber Creek (2-1) at Williamstown (3-0), Friday night, 7PM. This is a game between last year’s South Jersey Group 4 and 5 champions, respectively. Williamstown has won two close games against good Cherokee and Shawnee teams, coming from behind in the fourth quarter against Cherokee last week. Timber Creek averages over 40 points a game and their defense will have to be ready this week. They have a budding star in sophomore wide receiver Cameron Chambers and Lamont Bradford leads both lines.
Middletown South (2-0) at Manalapan (2-0), Friday night, 7PM. This features two of the Shore Conference’s best teams. Manalapan has scored 49 points in each of its first two games and their big star is wide receiver Saeed Blacknall, a Rutgers commitment. Linebacker Chris Noesges is their leading tackler. Middletown South has victories over Brick and Howell. Top players are TE/DT Tayler Hendrickson and QB Kyle Brey. They have a young team with several sophomores playing.
Eastern (3-0) at Rancocas Valley (2-0), Saturday, 3:30PM. Eastern has averaged 50 points a game in their three wins and features the passing of quarterback Tom Flacco. Flacco’s favorite target is wide receiver Keshawn Segers. After allowing 60 points in their first two games, Eastern’s defense settled in with a shutout last week. Rancocas Valley is a veteran team and beat Notre Dame last week. They feature running back Isaiah Gibson and two way end Tyler Schneider.
Allentown (3-1) at Hopewell Valley (3-0), Friday, 7PM. It’s rare when a game between two Mercer County teams is featured, but this pits an undefeated team and a team whose only loss is to Alta (Utah). Hopewell Valley has averaged just under 40 points a game in its three wins, but Allentown presents a tougher challenge. Hopewell Valley features the passing of Austin Fellows and the running of Andrew Yuska. Allentown features the running of 6-foot-2, 255 lb. Daivone Thomas. They came back from their loss in Utah to beat Hamilton and New Egypt.
St. Peter’s Prep (4-0) at Bergen Catholic (1-3), Saturday, 2:30PM. The Marauders opened with two impressive opening wins against Gozaga Prep (Washington DC) and Eastern Christian (Maryland) and have some weapons on offense with quarterback Brandon Wimbush, running back, Jonathan Hilliman, and slot receiver Corey Caddle. The defense features defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick. Bergen Catholic took a beating from St. Joe’s (Montvale) and need a win very badly. Two way lineman Kurt Holuba is their best player and they will need a big effort from tight end/defensive end Garrett Dickerson if they are going to win.
Edison (2-0) at South Brunswick (1-2), Friday, 7PM. The surprising Eagles of Edison travel to face the defending Central Jersey champs in South Brunswick. The Eagles have beaten state powers Piscataway and Sayreville and feature the passing of James Waldron. His favorite targets are wide receivers Kyle Boyer-Tucker and Nick Wales. After winning the opener, South Brunswick has lost the last two to Monroe and Old Bridge, respectively. They are still be reckoned with and have some weapons the triple option attack in halfback Dontae Strickland and fullback Dahrae Ford.
