March 13, 2013The first round of the TOC was held Wednesday night at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.
In the first contest TOC 5th seeded Group 2 champ Newark Tech edged TOC 4th seeded Group 3 champ Newark Eastside 42-39 as 6-foot-3 Sr. Rakwan Kelly scored 14 points with 11 boards. 6-foot Jr. Akbar Hoffman had 12 for Newark Eastside, 10 in the opening half.
Both teams struggled mightily from three point range, Tech 2-15 and Eastside 1-9. They fared only slightly better overall, Tech 32% and Eastside 28%. Newark Tech had an 8-2 advantage in second chance points.
In the second game TOC 3rd seeded Group 4 champ Atlantic City came from behind to beat TOC #6 seed and Group 1 champ Point Pleasant Beach 80-73 in two overtimes. 6-foot-3 Jr. Isaiah Graves had 22 for the winners. 6-foot Jr. Matt Farrell had an excellent floor game with 23 and 8 assists for Beach.
AC had a 29-16 advantage on points off turnovers. The Vikings outscored Beach 23-12 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. AC was 20-37 from the ft line while Beach was 9-16.
